Scott Alexander attended art school in the ’90s and worked as an art director, creative director, and photographer for 20+ years before transitioning to full-time woodturning in 2020. He specializes in green to finished bowls, vases, and wall sculptures. An expert on the tools and techniques used and needed to turn and dry green bowls and various pieces successfully. He focuses more on sculpting shapes in an artful manner than purely driven by technique.
Topics to be covered:
- Techniques for turning green wood to get desired results.
- Tool sharpening- proper techniques used to create standard and custom grinds
- Designing while on the lathe- exploring shapes, finding the right technique to accomplish your goal, and taking into consideration how a piece will move in the drying process.
- Using dividers to lay out ideas on a workpiece
- Drying green wood - exploring several options for drying turned pieces to achieve desired results
Projects: All green to finish (May vary due to time constraints)
- Everyday bowl - 7.5” x 2.5” bowl to be used for everyday kitchen tasks, generally made using quartersawn stock
- Nested bowl set
- Hive bowl (large, rolled beads on the outside of a bowl)
- Banneton Bowl (tight rolled beads on the outside of a bowl)
- Thin art bowl

Our workshop is located in beautiful Provo, Utah, just 40 minutes south of Salt Lake City.
Upon registering for a class, we will send you a packet containing helpful information when planning your trip, including hotels near us and other fun things to do during your visit to Utah.
In the event of cancellation:
We reserve the right to cancel workshops up to 4 weeks prior to the class date. In the event of a workshop cancellation, full tuition will be refunded. Please do not make airline reservations more than 4 weeks prior to the first day of class as we do not reimburse for any travel expenses incurred.
Student Cancellation:
Cancellations less than 6 weeks prior to the start of class will be subject to a 50% cancellation fee.
