This class focuses on our three most popular YouTube projects: The Coin Box, Utility Box, and Artifact Pots. These projects are popular, fun, and challenging to turn.
In making these three projects, Mike will help students learn and understand proper tooling techniques, basic sharpening techniques, and how to create a great-looking, durable finish. Emphasis will also be placed on learning what makes good design and how to achieve it by understanding design ratio, proper curves, and proportions.
Topics to be covered:
Developing an eye for aesthetics and form
Students will learn to appreciate and cultivate a keen sense of aesthetics in woodturning. This includes understanding proportions, curves, and overall design principles contributing to visually pleasing forms.
Understanding and Implementing Proper Tool Control
Mastery of proper tool technique is fundamental in woodturning. Students will learn how to handle various tools effectively, ensuring precise cuts and shaping that enhance the quality of their projects. This includes understanding the importance of the tool bevel and its role in achieving good results and catch-free turning.
Do’s and Don’ts of Creating an Excellent Fitting Lid
A critical aspect of box-making and similar projects is a perfectly fitting lid. Students will learn the dos and don’ts of lid construction, focusing on techniques to ensure snug fits that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Sanding, Finishing Techniques
Proper sanding and finishing techniques are crucial for bringing out the natural beauty of wood and protecting the surface. The workshop will cover various methods of sanding, polishing, and applying finishes, including options for coloring and enhancing wood grain.
Proper Sharpening Techniques
Sharp tools are essential for achieving clean cuts and precise details. Students will learn the correct sharpening techniques for different woodturning tools, ensuring they are always in optimal working condition.
Day 1- The Coin Box
This project invites students to explore the intricacies of crafting a 2-piece lidded box designed to pass change through the lid and into the box below. Under the guidance of Mike Nish, students have the freedom to tailor their designs to their skill level and preference, whether opting for simplicity or complexity.
Central to turning this project is mastering the techniques required to achieve a precisely fitted lid. Mike will impart invaluable insights into the correct procedures and adjustments necessary to ensure a snug and functional lid, enhancing the box's aesthetic and functional aspects.
In addition to the technical aspects, students will explore various finishing options and learn how to apply a finish that protects the wood and enhances its natural beauty.
Day 2- Utility Box 2.0
The advanced version of the Utility Box embodies beauty and functionality, making it an exceptional project for woodturners. This box features a distinctive beaded recessed lid that adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to its design. The dome-shaped lid and low-profile design enhance its aesthetic appeal and contribute to its practicality for storing jewelry and other small items.
This utility box challenges students to master advanced woodturning techniques, including precision shaping, beading, detailing, and lid fitting. Mike will guide students through the intricacies of these techniques, ensuring that each aspect of the box is crafted with precision and finesse. Students can expect a challenging yet rewarding experience as they create a beautiful box that’s a functional work of art.
Day 3- Artifact Pots
Inspired by our long-time friend Richard Raffan, Artifact Pots represent a delightful departure from traditional woodturning. These pots are characterized by their quirky and whimsical appearance, making them visually appealing and a joy to turn.
Typically turned from cross-grain unseasoned wood, Artifact Pots undergo a fascinating transformation as they dry. The wood naturally warps and develops a textured surface, adding to the charm and uniqueness of each piece. This process ensures that every Artifact Pot is unique, with its distinctive character and personality.
Mike’s expert guidance ensures that students can navigate this material's unique challenges and nuances, ultimately producing stunning and memorable pieces that reflect their craftsmanship and artistic flair.
